A few weeks ago, we had the pleasure of hosting a special taster session of our Stress and Anxiety Workshop at the local community hall in Weston-Super-Mare, North Somerset. It was a wonderful afternoon, filled with great conversations, useful insights, and practical tools to help manage stress and anxiety in our everyday lives. We want to take a moment to share how the session went and, more importantly, what you can take away to apply at home.
A Welcoming Environment for All
We’re proud to say that the event was designed with everyone in mind, making it accessible and comfortable for all participants, including those with physical disabilities. Whether it was the wide doors, comfortable seating, or clear signage, we made sure that everyone could feel welcome and at ease. And of course, we didn’t forget the refreshments! We provided light snacks that catered to a variety of food allergies and intolerances, ensuring everyone could enjoy something.
Additionally, all materials, including feedback forms, were available in large print. We believe in making sure everyone has the resources they need to engage fully with the session. It was heart-warming to see so many people coming together, eager to learn and take care of themselves.
Part One: Insights and Exercises with Dr Szeri
We kicked off the workshop with the fantastic Dr Szerenke Kovacs (www.skcounsellingpsychology.co.uk) , affectionately known as Dr Szeri, a highly respected chartered psychologist in the area. Rated among the top three psychologists in North Somerset, she brought a wealth of knowledge and experience to the table.
Dr Szeri not only shared valuable information about stress and anxiety but also led the group through two incredibly beneficial exercises: a "5-minute breathing space" and a "Body scan" session. These exercises helped participants instantly feel more grounded and relaxed. It was amazing to see the positive reactions – people reported feeling calmer, more centred, and even better equipped to be able to cope with the stresses of everyday life.
We often think of managing stress as something that needs a big effort, but as Dr Szeri showed us, sometimes it’s the small, mindful moments that can make the biggest difference. These quick exercises are something you can try at home to get a moment of peace during a busy day. Simply take five minutes to focus on your breath or do a quick body scan, where you check in with how your body feels, releasing tension from each part of your body as you go.
Part Two: Relaxation with Faith and Lizzie from Me Time Massage and Wellbeing
After the insightful psychology session, we were fortunate to welcome the brilliant Faith and Lizzie Venn from Me Time Massage and Wellbeing (metimemassageandwell-being.my.canva.site). Their expertise in massage therapy added a wonderful touch to the workshop, helping participants unwind even further.
On this occasion, they treated us to a relaxing Indian head massage. This ancient practice not only feels amazing but is also effective in reducing tension in the neck, shoulders, and head – common areas where stress tends to accumulate. It was a fantastic way to top off the learning and give everyone a sense of relaxation and wellbeing.
Many of the participants left feeling physically lighter, mentally calmer, and more equipped to continue practising self-care at home. Faith and Lizzie also provided helpful tips for how to incorporate simple self-care rituals into everyday life, so we can all keep looking after our mental and emotional health long after the workshop ended.
Building Connections and a Sense of Community
Between the two parts of the workshop, as well as after the session wrapped up, something wonderful happened. Participants stayed around to mingle, chat, and connect with each other. It was inspiring to witness how people were eager to share their experiences, learn from one another, and offer support. This sense of community involvement truly brought the workshop to life and made the afternoon feel even more special.
There’s something deeply comforting about being part of a group where you feel understood, and the conversations were full of warmth and encouragement. Many participants commented on how much they enjoyed the chance to talk to others going through similar challenges. It was clear that this feeling of connection added another layer of value to the day – a reminder that we’re never alone on our journey to better mental and emotional wellbeing.
What You Can Do at Home
As you can see, our workshop was all about providing tools that can be used day-to-day to manage stress and anxiety. Here are a few things you can try at home, just like we did during the session:
Breathing Space: Take five minutes in your day to practise deep breathing. Close your eyes, take a slow deep breath in for a count of four, hold for seven seconds, and exhale for eight. This simple technique can help reset your mind and body.
Body Scan: While sitting or lying down, slowly scan your body from head to toe. Notice any areas of tension and consciously relax them. This is a great way to reduce physical stress and become more aware of how your body feels.
Self-Care Massage: If you can’t get to a professional massage therapist, try giving yourself a little tension-relieving massage. Gently massage your temples, neck, and shoulders to release built-up stress. You can also try using calming essential oils like orange, lavender or eucalyptus for added relaxation.
Take Breaks: It’s easy to get caught up in work or daily responsibilities, but remember to take breaks throughout the day. A short walk, stretching, or simply stepping outside for fresh air can help reset your mind.
Looking Ahead: Calm Together Project
We couldn’t be more excited about what’s coming next! As we look forward to spring, our CALM TOGETHER project is just around the corner. This project will be all about building a community where we can come together to support each other’s mental and emotional wellbeing. We’re so happy to have the chance to connect with so many wonderful people, and we can’t wait to share more details with you soon.
Thank you again to everyone who joined us for the workshop. Your participation and positive feedback made it such a special experience. We’re looking forward to continuing this journey of self-care and wellbeing with you. Remember, taking time to care for yourself isn’t just a luxury – it’s essential for living a balanced and healthy life. So, we invite you to stay tuned for more upcoming workshops, tips, and tools you can easily incorporate into your daily routine.

Marta and the Team
I truly appreciate the incredible work that Blessings in Action is doing to support the homeless during these harsh winter months. The efforts of Pastor Boat and the team to not only provide essentials but also take the time to listen and understand the needs of those affected is truly commendable.
The outreach seems well-organized, and it's great to see a focus on both immediate relief.
I found this workshop extremely beneficial and very insightful. Dr Szeri is extremely knowledgeable in her field and her calming nature helps you into a very deep state of relaxation. I thoroughly enjoyed my Indian head massage which left me feeling extremely calm and tranquil.
Marta did an amazing job in organising this event and I am very excited to see what else she has in store for us!
Congratulations Marta and team for hosting a great session and for the work you do to help others. Very inspiring and thought provoking to help drive the importance of self care and recognising the signs of stress to put coping mechanisms in place for a healthier happier you. Thank you!
As a secondary school teacher, I'd be highly interested in stress and anxiety workshop. Like the format, the choice of guests and the practical part of it. I can imagine that most people who work in the public sector would naturally gravitate towards well-being trainings and workshops. Give me a date for the next one and I'll be there.
